Events on Private Land
Are you planning an event on private land? Did you know that you may require approvals or permits depending on the type, size and impact of your event.
When is an Approval or Permit Required?
1. Development Approval (DA) – Land Use Change
You may need Development Approval if:
- Your premises hosts more than 6 events per year
→ This is often considered a change of land use.
2. Local Nuisance Exemptions
Requirements depend on the size and impact of your event:
- Small-scale, once-off events (50–200 people):
- May not require a local nuisance exemption, depending on location and anticipated impacts.
- Larger events (200+ people):
- More likely to require a local nuisance exemption based on location, noise, dust, timing, and neighbourhood impacts.
3. Traffic-Related Requirements
You may need a Traffic Management Plan if:
- Your event affects council roads, including closures, detours, parking impacts, or significant traffic flow changes.
- Required under the Local Government Act or Road Traffic Act.
4. Signage on Council Land
If you plan to place event signage on council land, you’ll likely need a:
- Section 221 Permit under the Local Government Act 1999.
5. Food Handling
If food is being sold at the event:
- You must lodge the appropriate Food Safety Notifications (required under the Food Act).
