Barossa Character Area Planning
The Barossa Council initiated a strategic planning review of the Barossa Character Preservation District in 2022 to address gaps between the intent of the Character Preservation legislation, introduced in 2012 and the planning policies applied to development under the Planning & Design Code, which came into effect on 19 March 2021.
Our Growth and Character Preservation community consultation, conducted in May and June 2023, attracted over 700 pieces of community feedback. We asked the community to identify key considerations for growth and infrastructure for each township, and opportunities to preserve the special character of the Barossa. The community feedback helped inform the direction for the Barossa Character Area Review.
At the December 2023 Council Meeting, Council endorsed the Strategic Planning Review of the Barossa Character Area - Update Report. The full Council report and the Update Report, prepared by Paul Mickan, can be found on page 247 of the December Council agenda.
The Greater Adelaide Regional Plan, released on 17 March 2025, commits to initiating a Code Amendment to reinforce the character values in the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale Character Preservation Districts, whilst supporting primary industries, within 3 years.
