Batteries cannot be placed in the kerbside yellow recycling bin or red waste bin. Batteries can produce sparks that may start a fire in collection trucks and at material processing facilities.

Collection points for standard batteries, such as AA, AAA, C, D, 9V, 6V and button batteries is available at Aldi in Nuriootpa. Other B-cycle accredited locations can also be found by visiting the B-cycle website. When batteries are recycled correctly, valuable materials like magnesium and zinc can be removed for use in new products.

Items with embedded and non-removable batteries can be dropped off for free at NAWMA Resource Recovery Centre at Gate 3 Bellchambers Road Edinburgh North, or Heathfield Resource Recovery Centre at 32 Scott Creek Road Heathfield.

Household hazardous wastes, including chemicals, paints and batteries do not belong in your kerbside bin.

Before seeking a safe disposal option, is there someone else you know who might be able to use the product?

If your property does have old or unwanted chemicals or paints that you need to dispose of, please take them to a Household Hazardous Waste Depot. The two closest locations to the Barossa are:

• NAWMA's Edinburgh North Resource Recovery Centre (RRC) at Bellchambers Road Edinburgh North. For more information contact the NAWMA Customer Experience Team on (08) 8259 2100, or
• Windmill Hill Transfer Station at 1 Windmill Lane, Totness, Hahndorf. For more information contact Mount Barker District Council on (08) 8388 1099.

This service is provided by Green Industries SA for residents and small primary producers to dispose of hazardous waste safety, responsibly and free of charge.

If paint is dry and you can tap the hardened tablet of paint out of the tin, the dry paint tablet can be place in the red waste bin. Empty, dry paint tins can be recycled in the yellow recycling bin.

Non-hazardous batteries (AA, AAA, D) can be recycled at ALDI Barossa Central with the B-cycle Battery Recycling Program.

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has strict regulations on the disposal of medical waste of all types. Medical sharps including needles, hypodermic needles and syringes with needles never go in the kerbside red waste bin. Residents can access a sharps disposal program through Council. Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous material, which has been mined in Australia and overseas from several types of mineral rock.

If left undisturbed asbestos generally does not pose a health risk, however, when disturbed during renovations and home maintenance, asbestos has the potential to cause severe health concerns if inhaled.

Removal of asbestos from domestic premises:

• Generally, asbestos products left undisturbed do not present a significant health risk provided the material is in reasonable condition.

• A homeowner may remove asbestos sheeting from their own property without a licence provided they follow the safety control measures described on the Safe Work SA webpage.

• Once asbestos products have been safely removed, packaged and labelled, they must be transported to an EPA licenced landfill or waste transfer station.
