Electronic Waste (E-waste)

E-waste items are banned from landfill and never go in the yellow recycling bin.

Electronic waste, commonly known as E-waste, is any electrical or electronic item with a power plug or battery that is no longer wanted. It includes a large range of items including computers, televisions, game consoles and white goods.

Drop E-waste off to an approved facility for recycling like, Springton Waste Transfer Station, or put it out as part of a registered Council kerbside hard waste collection (see Declutter and save). Noting e-waste can only be dropped at Springton Waste Transfer Station during opening hours which are the second Saturday of each month from 9am to 3pm and closed on days with a Total Fire Ban.

Outside of these times, NAWMA's Resource Recovery Centre at Gate 3, Bellchambers Road, Edinburgh North SA 5113 is also an approved e-waste drop location, and other approved locations can be found at Unplug N' Drop.

Repair or donate before you dispose

Before disposing of an electrical item, have a think about the following:

  • Repair the item to extend its useful life
  • Donate the item to a second-hand store or to someone you know

Some second-hand stores may accept unwanted electrical items. Some other charitable organisations in Australia accept mobile phones and will put them in the hands of someone in need like The Reconnect Project or DV Safe Phone.

Always perform a factory reset before donating and check to see that the charity has a data management policy before donating.

The Fathers Farm, E-waste recycling, helping your community

The Father's Farm paused taking E-waste on 30 November 2025, while they work through securing a new site to operate from.

The Father’s Farm is a non-profit organisation that helps at-risk youth by providing hands-on learning programs, funded by E-waste collection and community support.

Council is committed to supporting The Father's Farm when they are operational again at a new site.

FAQs

E-waste collected for recycling are generally manually disassembled and assorted into various components. These individual materials such as cabling, circuit boards, glass, metals, and plastics are then processed so they can be used in the production of new products.

The Father's Farm partners with Electronics Recycling Australia (ERA) to maximise materials recovered.

E-waste often contains precious resources including gold, glass, steel, copper, zinc, aluminum, platinum, plastic and brass which can be recovered and recycled into new products. When recycled properly, 90-95% of E-waste components can be recovered helping drive a circular economy. E-waste recycling also ensures that hazardous substances such as mercury and lead in your electronic devices are disposed of correctly.

The Environmental Protection (Waste to Resources Policy) bans E-waste items direct to landfill.

Batteries

Collection points for standard batteries, such as AA, AAA, C, D, 9V, 6V and button batteries is available at Aldi in Nuriootpa. Other B-cycle accredited locations can also be found by visiting the B-cycle website. When batteries are recycled correctly, valuable materials like magnesium and zinc can be removed for use in new products.

Batteries cannot be placed in the kerbside yellow recycling bin or red waste bin. Batteries can produce sparks that may start a fire in collection trucks and at material processing facilities.
