Green organics bin (food waste and garden waste)

The green organics bin collection occurs each fortnight on the same day but opposite week to your yellow recycling bin collection.

It is a mandatory service for Townships and a service charge is applied to Council rates per the Fees and Charges Register. Residents in rural areas may apply to opt in to the service with approval subject to local demand and where the collection is deemed feasible.

All new services will receive a kitchen caddy with the delivery of a new 240L green bin. The caddy is designed to help capture, store and transport food waste from the kitchen to the green organics bin.

• Anything that grows in your garden can go in your green bin. This includes flowers, weeds, lawn clippings, leaves, sticks, small logs, bark, and more. As the saying goes – if it grows, it goes!
• All food scraps, including citrus, onion, dairy, meat, bones, fish, fruit and vegetables. But before you put any food scraps into your green bin, be sure to remove all packaging first unless it is compostable.
• Pizza boxes and other food packaging that is paper, cardboard or certified compostable.
• Paper towel, napkins and tissues.
• Coffee grounds, tea bags and loose-leaf tea.
• Paper straws.
• Shredded paper.
• Pet waste.

Residents can apply for a second green organics bin here. An additional service charge will apply.

The green organic bin service is mandatory for properties within the Township boundaries of Angaston, Cockatoo Valley, Eden Valley, Lyndoch, Mount Pleasant, Moculta, Nuriootpa, Penrice, Sandy Creek, Springton, Stockwell, Tanunda, and Williamstown.

It is included as a service charge that is applied to the Council rates notices and can be found in our Fees and Charges Register.

A resident can apply for a service exemption where they are:

• the property owner or ratepayer,
• effectively managing green organic waste via compositing, and
• willing to declare that no green waste will be placed in the red waste bin or yellow recycling bin.

Photographic evidence of a suitable onsite composting system (compost pile or bay, static or tumbling compost bins) and a signed Statutory Declaration stating that green waste, including food waste is managed through other means and will not be placed in red waste bin or yellow recycling bin is to be included with the application.

Each request is individually assessed, and we may require further information from you to help with the assessment of your application. Please allow 10 working days for your application to be approved or declined.

If you live in a mandatory service area, composting is the only allowable reason not to have a green organic bin service in line with the Waste Management Services Policy.

No credits or refunds are payable where exemptions are granted during a current rate year. Annual service charges for approved exemptions will be waived on rates notice from the beginning of the new rate year (July). Exemption applications should be received no later than 30 April for it to be effective beginning of the next rate cycle. Council may apply a partial credit for service cancellations received after 30 April and within 60 days of receipt of quarter one rates notice.

Approval conditions:

• Approvals may be subject to biennial review.
• You are required to notify Council if your circumstances change, this includes moving from your current premises.
• In the event that a property is sold, the Green Organic service exemption will be revoked, charges will be reinstated on the rates notice and a Green Organic bin will be delivered to the property.
• Bins that are assigned to the property must not be removed from the property when there is a change of tenants or sale of the property. All bins remain the property of Solo Resource Recovery.
