Bin FAQs
Fees and charges for bin and waste services are set each year as part of our budget process and are applied as a separate fee-for-service on your rates notice. Service charges for the 2026/2027 financial year are:

If you are eligible to reduce your service level, no credit or refund will be given for any unused portion of the annual service fee within the financial year. Exemption or cancellation requests must be submitted by 30 April to take effect at the start of the next billing cycle. After 30 April, the Council may offer a partial credit for cancellations if the request is received within 60 days of the first-quarter rates notice.
Each bin is fitted with a bin identification code and a radio frequency identification device (RFID). This will allow for misplaced or lost bins to be easily returned to the rightful property. It will allow Solo Resource Recovery to verify that a bin has been serviced when presented for collection.
Bins are allocated to and remain with the property as part of the collection service but remain in ownership of Solo Resource Recovery for the term of the service contract.
To help ensure your bin collection runs smoothly and enable drivers to pick up, empty and replace your bins safely, it's important to:
- move bins to the kerb by 6am on the day of the designated service, or the evening before
- position the bin within 1m of the kerb, facing the roadway with the handles facing the property to allow ready access to the bin by the robotic-armed vehicle
- leave at least a 50cm gap between your bins
- leave at least one metre between your bin and any obstructions such as trees, cars or poles
- do not overfill your bin
- ensure the bin lid is closed to avoid spills.
Bins should be returned to your property within 24 hours of being emptied. Please do not leave bins out on the kerb or on the road after collection. Bins that are placed on the road pose a risk for drivers and pedestrians and disrupt traffic. Leaving your bins out for prolonged periods may result in their removal. Within rural areas, a common collection point may be nominated for ease of waste collection by Solo Resource Recovery and Council.
Bins must be placed out for collection no earlier than 24 hours prior to the nominated collection day and must be removed from kerbside on the same day as the collection, after the collection service has taken place. This is a requirement of the Waste Management By-law 2021.
Where a bin service has been delayed or missed by the contractor, the bin may remain on the kerbside until the service has been performed.
Properties within the township boundaries of Angaston, Cockatoo Valley, Eden Valley, Lyndoch, Mount Pleasant, Moculta, Nuriootpa, Penrice, Sandy Creek, Springton, Stockwell, Tanunda, and Williamstown are classified as mandatory for the service.
Once collected from your kerbside bin, your food and garden organics are taken to a local composting facility, where they are turned into nutrient-rich compost, soil, and mulch products. These products are then used on South Australian farms, vineyards, and in household gardens. Composting creates a circular economy, reducing the creation of greenhouse gases, especially methane, that would otherwise be produced if organic material were sent to landfill, helping to combat climate change.
While the packaging may say it's recyclable, not all recyclable materials can be processed through every recycling program.
The yellow kerbside recycling bin service is designed to handle specific types of recyclable materials that can be easily separated and processed at the local material recycling facility (MRF). However, certain items, like bubble wrap, are considered soft plastics and cannot be processed through this system. The technology at the MRF isn’t equipped to effectively separate and sort soft plastics, and there aren’t enough markets that can handle them for recycling.
