Tour Down Under returns to Tanunda

For the third year running, Tanunda will “feel the rush” of the Santos Tour Down Under (TDU), with the town again hosting a start and finish on 21 January, 2026.

Stage 1 of the Santos Tour Down Under Men’s Race will see riders tackle 120.6kilometres through the region, offering plenty of vantage points for spectators to enjoy the action along the way, including a Ziptrak® Sprint past Lyndoch’s famed Barossa Park.

“The Barossa has been an integral part of the Santos Tour Down Under since its inception, so we are naturally delighted to be going back there again in January,” Race Director Stuart O’Grady said.

“There is a real European feel to the race whenever we are in the region, with people having a picnic on the side of the road with a baguette and a bottle of wine, and really enjoying the atmosphere.”

After the prologue to start the race the day before, Stuart said Stage 1 is the first opportunity for sprinters.

“The race goes out past Lyndoch and the Barossa Park which is a great addition to the state and used for Gather Round this year,” he added.

“Then riders come back through Tanunda for the more traditional circuit through Angaston and the back of Mengler’s Hill where they’ll do three laps before the finish.”

The Barossa Council Mayor Bim Lange is excited to see the Barossa return to the spotlight again, further cementing its place as a premier events and tourism destination.

“In previous years, people were spilling out of coffee shops and eateries onto the footpath. Kids were having their faces painted and families were milling around, enjoying the activations in Tanunda’s town square and around the rotunda.

“I always love seeing groups set up chairs along the race route too, waving and cheering on the riders, it adds to the atmosphere of a fantastic event that has become a firm favourite on our calendar.”
