The Barossa Council has achieved outstanding results in the Essential Services Commission of South Australia (ESCOSA) findings.
Following its analysis of all 68 Councils in SA, ESCOSA has given The Barossa Council’s current and projected financial performances the tick of approval, describing it as “sustainable due to its strong governance processes and favourable sustainable ratios.”
CEO, Martin McCarthy said the result highlights one “simple” key to success.
“It’s planning, planning and more planning along with consultation, excellent project assessment and delivery, long term vision and the discipline to stick to the plan over many councils,” Martin said.
“It really is a credit to all involved. Developing long term partnerships with our community, especially volunteers and clubs is vital and shouldn’t be underestimated, given the value they bring to the community.
Equally as important is being recognised by State and Commonwealth Governments as a trusted partner with a proven track record of delivery.
The ESCOSA report revealed The Barossa Council faced low risks in achieving its operating surplus and effectively managing its assets over the forecast period.
With a strong and demonstrated focus on transparency, community consultation and agile service delivery, it said The Barossa Council has managed its operating surplus conservatively during the 10-year Historical Period (from 2014-15 to 2023-24), achieving an average operating surplus ratio of 3.8 percent.
Council has also forecast an operating surplus ratio of 2.1 percent per annum on average for the 2025/26 to 2034/35 period which is lower than the historical result, but reflective of its planned capital program.
Mayor Bim Lange congratulated all involved in achieving the glowing report.
“I want to acknowledge the CEO and Council staff for their commitment, dedication and professionalism,” Mayor Lange said.
“They’ve contributed to putting us in a very strong position as we focus on Concordia development and continue to build on the already strong relationships we have with developers and State Government.
“With these encouraging results from ESCOSA, our proven partnerships and the certainty given us following the Town of Gawler boundary reform completion, we can move forward with confidence.”
