Teaming up to beautify Kroemer’s Reserve

Nuriootpa High Year 12 students joined Council’s Open Spaces team during a special collaboration to beautify Kroemer’s Reserve.

Spending an hour each Tuesday over five weeks, students helped design garden beds, plan irrigation works and plant tubestock to complete the landscaping project as part of their Outdoor Education studies.

Cameron Bourke, Council's Team Leader Open Spaces said it gave staff an opportunity to engage with students and provide an insight into the many different roles within Council.

"It's a great way to show kids what's out there in terms of careers and it gives them just a small sample of what Council does out in their community," said Cameron.

"Working in such a prominent location also means when they go out with their parents, they can say they were part of that and watch it grow."

Nuriootpa High School Principal David Marino agreed the program created a sense of ownership and pride for students as well as offering practical experience.

"A bit of learning happens in the classroom, but a lot of learning happens outside of the classroom," said David.

"The opportunity to come here and actually have a hands-on experience in the real world, in a real context working with experts from Council is an invaluable experience for our young people and a great way to connect with the community.

"We are so fortunate to have such a wonderful local Council who work so strongly with our school, so we say thank you."
