Shaping the future of an Angaston landmark

One of Angaston’s most prime-positioned buildings is the topic of The Barossa Council’s latest community consultation, aimed at improving what has become a tired and underutilised space.

The Women’s Memorial Restrooms, built in honour of the women who served in WWII, is located in the heart of Angaston’s Memorial Reserve and is a treasured landmark in the town.

However, an engineer’s report has revealed significant structural issues, including cracks in the stone walls and a drop in floor level, particularly in the north-eastern corner.

Mayor Bim Lange said the need for structural remediation has created a timely opportunity to investigate the possibility of making further improvements.

“Before undertaking works to stabilise the building, we thought why not engage an architect to come up with some preliminary concepts to see how we might convert it into a more useable space?” Mayor Lange said.

“We have a few different options, from an open picnic pavilion right through to an enclosed function space that could be used as a hireable venue or even retail.”

Mayor Lange encourages the community to have their say.

“Do we fix what’s there and leave the space more or less as is and underutilised? Or do you want us to invest in one of the more significant refurbishments for broader use and greater appeal?” he added.

Community consultation starts 15 July with information, including all concept plans, available to view both online and in person at the Nuriootpa Council office.

Council’s Manager Assets and Capital Delivery, Matthew Parkin, will also be onsite at the Angaston location for a pop-up information session between 4pm and 5.30pm on Thursday, 30 July to answer questions and show the options Council is considering.
