Mayor's XI is looking good

Following the success of last year’s event, the newly named Barossa Vintage Cricket Carnival for Over 60/70s is making a comeback, looking better than ever.

Thanks to a donation by Mayor Bim Lange, the Mayor’s XI team will be wearing new tee-shirts when they take on Barossa XI at Tanunda Recreation Park.

Scheduled for 3pm on 18 March, it marks day two of the four-day competition which sees matches being played at Angaston, Sandy Creek, Eudunda and Saddleworth.

Veteran cricketer and Mayor's XI team manager, Paul Thompson, says it’s a match well worth watching.

“You can expect to see some very nice bowling and very handy batsmen in the Mayor’s XI”, says the 76 year old.

“We’ve tried to make it even with bowlers and batters, a lot of them are in their 70s, only a few are 60 plus.”

All eight participating teams and their followers will be attending a celebration dinner at the multi-award winning Tanunda Football Clubrooms. A highlight of last year's event, attendees had nothing but praise for the venue.

“It’s already booked out,” adds Paul who revealed plans are well underway for next year’s carnival."

"New South Wales have indicated they want to come, Tasmania is coming, they’ve all heard about this Barossa Carnival and they want to come to the Barossa.”

Paul is also recruiting for a Barossa based team to join the S.A. Veterans Cricket Association action and the feelers are out to find a home ground.

“As long as you are going to turn 60 in that cricket season, you can sign up,” he says.
