Fully connected - Keyneton Road finished

It’s smooth driving along Keyneton Road, thanks to the completion of a multi-year program resulting in the sealing of one of the region’s most picturesque routes

Mayor Bim Lange said people can finally travel all the way from Eden Valley, through Keyneton and Moculta, to Truro and the Sturt Highway on bitumen rather than gravel.

“The completion of this last section provides significant safety, accessibility, tourism and freight efficiency benefits for the Barossa and Mid Murray regions,” says Mayor Lange.

Mid Murray Council funded the 1.3km section within their boundary, while The Barossa Council invested $1.67 million to fund the remaining 5.2 km stretch built over three stages.

Henschke Chief Winemaker, Stephen Henschke welcomed the project’s completion, saying it not only provided a safer road to his family’s winery and cellar door, but also a beautiful tourist drive past historic stone walls, rolling vineyards, farms and native landscapes.

“We worked with Council to minimise the environmental impact along the road when they bitumised it,” Stephen said.

“For us, it was important the native vegetation and all the trees were maintained as this area is so very special and unique. It’s a beautiful red gum/blue gum woodland in the northern Mount Lofty Ranges that supports many endangered bird species.”
