Flag footy to capture Barossa’s attention
6 Jul 2026Barossa will play host to Oceania’s largest flag football competition, Capture the Flag on 24-25 October 2026.
This premier international event will bring together teams and athletes from across Australia, New Zealand, Asia, and beyond. More than 550+ players and coaches to the region are expected to visit the region, together with their families, supporters and spectators, creating valuable opportunities for local businesses and contributing to the region’s economy.
Flag football, a variant of gridiron, has a strong following with several national and international competitions and in 2028 it will be a discretionary event for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
Event organisers, Flag Football Australia said “the event will strongly align with the first ever NFL game being played in Melbourne in September.
Mayor Bim Lange said while the Barossa continues to be a destination of choice for events of all formats and styles, it’s particularly exciting for the region to host a new sport of this calibre.
“It’s great to see a new sport come to the region and one that has such a strong following internationally."

Mayor Lange said securing this competition highlights the region’s broad appeal and its ability to attract major events that deliver significant economic and community benefits.
Capture the Flag competition will be held at Nuriootpa Centennial Park on 24-25 October. The event is proudly supported by The Barossa Council.
