Read, Talk, Play, Shop
From May 2026 you’ll find something new for families with young children at the Barossa Fresh supermarket.
Barossa Libraries has partnered with the Barossa Co-op to bring Read, Talk, Play, Shop to life. This free, community campaign will help turn your weekly shopping trip into a fun adventure for children aged 0–5 with shopping theme prompts to read, talk, play and sing with the young children in your life.
While you’re shopping look out for floor decals, activity posters, and a free book library. Each is inspired by the Words Grow Minds resources, which are backed by the latest research in early childhood development. Whether you're naming and counting fruit and veg, singing in the nappy aisle, or borrowing a book on your way in, every small moment and interaction adds up to something big for young children's growing minds.
The project is proudly supported by a grant from Raising Literacy Australia.
In store early years program
Library staff will be taking their early years program to the supermarket as part of the campaign. At 10am on the first Thursday of the month families can bring their babies, toddlers, and preschoolers to Barossa Fresh to take part in 30 minutes of reading, singing, and playing together.
Programs will be at 10am on Thursday 7 May, 4 June, 2 July, 6 August, 3 September, 1 October, 5 November and 3 December. Follow the signs to the meat/bakery section, and go up the stairs or lift to the Level 1 area overlooking the supermarket.
