Angaston Town Hall

The Angaston Town Hall, built in 1911, stands prominently in the heart of Angaston. Constructed from locally sourced blue and white marble, it features intricate ornaments designed in a "domestic Gothic style".

Built to accommodate the needs of a growing population, Angaston Town Hall, known as Angaston Institute until 1977, was an initiative of Institute trustees.

Mrs CH Angas had the honour of laying the foundation stone in May 1911 and on 13 December that same year, the building was officially opened by parliamentarian Mr James Hague who was the last of the original trustees.

Designed by architect Frederick Dancker and constructed using local blue and white marble at a cost of 3,000 pounds, the Market Green was chosen as the location for the graceful building.

The site of many a celebration, dance, concert and public meeting, one of the venue’s pioneering ventures was the introduction of a 'community-owned picture-show' in 1914.

It led to the purchase of a cinema plant and further advancements including a sound plant in 1931 with screenings continuing until 1965.

Hosting recitals, plays, events, fairs and more, the hall’s front two rooms also served as a library until 2022.

Today, Angaston Town Hall continues to be a popular venue for both community gatherings and private events, as it maintains its status as a one of the most cherished institutions in the region.
