Located in historic Bethany, this idyllic rural picnic setting was once a watering hole and meeting place for the local Ngadjuri people.

Burnt-out hollows can still be seen in a couple large red gums growing along the nearby creek bank, a reminder of their use as shelters.

The reserve was “common ground” for German Lutheran settlers who had fled to the area seeking a new life following religious persecution in their home country of Silesia, (now part of Poland).

Back then this area of the village of Bethany, established in 1842, provided water and pasture for bullocks brought in by herdsman every morning to graze surrounding foothills.

A grove of white gum trees, planted by the Hage family in 1930s, still casts its welcome shade in the height of Summer as families, school children, youth and church groups continue to enjoy the grounds, just like they did every generation before.
