South Australia, like the rest of Australia, is facing a shortage of affordable housing for rent and purchase. The state is also seeing more single-person households.

This means the community needs a wider variety of housing options, including:

• Ancillary accommodation (granny flats, separate dwelling, tiny house, etc)
• Caravans
• Tiny Homes on Wheels (THOWs) and other moveable housing

Recent changes to legislation and policy have made it easier to accommodate smaller, secondary accommodation. However, planning and building approval are still required. This ensures:

• Safety for occupants
• Harmony with neighbours
• Minimal impact on local amenity
• Consideration of state and local heritage and the character preservation overlay
• Any other environmental impacts
