Multi-Generational Piano Stories – Piano Pop-Up & Interviews, Rae Howell, Barossa Women’s Artist Residency

A pop-up piano in Tanunda Town Square is bringing music, memories and conversations to life.

Meet artist-in-residence Rae Howell and share your family’s piano story — maybe even play a few notes. Your memories and recordings will become part of Rae’s installation The Piano: Hook, Line & Tinker, celebrating the Barossa’s rich musical heritage.

Throughout her five-week Barossa residency, composer and installation artist Rae Howell invites the community to gather and share the stories of their pianos. A well-loved upright piano will ‘pop-up’ in Tanunda Town Square, transforming the public space into a welcoming hub of conversation, memory and music-making.

Families and community are encouraged to drop by and play the piano, make a time to with Rae about the history of their own pianos — heirlooms passed down through generations, long-retired instruments gathering dust in farmhouses, or the piano that sparked a child’s first music lesson. Where possible, participants can also record a short performance on the pop-up piano.

These stories and recordings will help shape Rae’s ongoing project, The Piano: Hook, Line & Tinker, an ‘exploded-view’ sonic installation that celebrates the beauty and craft of the piano while revealing the sounds and histories within.

The pop-up piano sessions are free, informal and open to everyone. By sharing your piano story, you contribute to a living sound archive that honours the Barossa’s musical heritage and its enduring connection to this timeless instrument.
