We’re inviting writers of all ages to take part in our upcoming writing competition. Let your imagination run wild and bring your ideas to life on the page.
We can’t wait to see what you create!
Theme: The Library - your story must feature the Library or refer to a library/librarian in some capacity.
Categories
- Children (Primary School): open to children aged 12 and under
- Youth (High School): open to young writers aged 13-18 years
- Adult (18+): open to adults 18+
Entry Guidelines
- Word limit: Entries exceeding the applicable word limit will be disqualified from the competition.
- Primary School - 500 words
- High School – 1,500 words
- Adult - 3,000 words
- Genres accepted: Genre-fiction, narrative or long verse
- Format requirements: Word Doc or PDF. Hardcopies will not be accepted.
- Original work only: must not be previously published or AI generated. This includes using AI to write the story (or parts of), devise the plot or generate ideas.
- Number of entries: one per person
- Eligibility: Must be a South Australian resident. Employees of The Barossa Council are ineligible to win.
Key dates
- Entries open: 9.00am on Friday 31 July 2026
- Entries close: 5.00pm on Saturday 15 August 2026
- Judging period: Monday 17 August – 16 September 2026
- Winners announced: Winners will be announced and contacted by Barossa Council Library during the week beginning Monday 21 September.
