Council elections

From rubbish to roads, parks to paths, and bikes to bushwalks, local councils are central to creating places and spaces we enjoy in our everyday lives. Together with its communities, councils work on enhancing an area's liveability.

If you use your local library, enjoy a bite at a local café, or a run in the local park, the upcoming local council elections is your opportunity to contribute to making your community a better place to live.

They give local communities the opportunity to elect a Mayor and Council Members to represent their area and make local decisions.

Voting in council elections is voluntary.

Council general elections are held every 4 years, which normally conclude in November of each election year, although this year has been deferred.

The South Australian Parliament has passed legislation to defer the 2026 local government elections.

As a result:

• voting for the next local government elections will close at 5pm on Wednesday 7 April 2027
• the following local government elections will be then be held in November 2031. Elections will then return to a four-year cycle from November 2031 onward
